I had read many works by Somerset Maugham: all in translations by Nguyen Hien Le – from the autobiographical novels like Kiep Nhan, to the short story collections describing colonial life on the Pacific islands like Mua or Nhung Isle Than Than. But it was not until three publishing units simultaneously released The Moon and the Sixpence that I forced myself to read this famous work.
